Types of SMD Resistor Codes

1. 3-Digit Code (XYZ, XRZ, RYZ)

• The standard format is XYZ, where:
  • X and Y are significant figures.
  • Z is the multiplier (power of 10).
  • Example: 472 → 47 × 10² = 4.7kΩ.
• If R appears in the second position (XRZ), it acts as a decimal point:
  • Example: 3R3 → 3.3Ω.
• If R appears in the first position (RYZ), the value is less than 1Ω:
  • Example: R47 → 0.47Ω.

2. 4-Digit Code (WXYZ, WXRZ, WRYZ, RXYZ)

• The standard format is WXYZ, where:
  • WXY are significant figures.
  • Z is the multiplier (power of 10).
  • Example: 4701 → 470 × 10-5 = 4.07mΩ
• If R appears in the second position (WXRZ), it acts as a decimal point:
  • Example: 24R9 → 24.9Ω.
• If R appears in the first position (RXYZ), the value is less than 1Ω:
  • Example: R100 → 0.100Ω (100mΩ).
• If R appears in the third position (WRYZ), the value is in decimal format:
  • Example: 68R5 → 68.5Ω.

3. EIA-96 Code

The EIA-96 system is used for high-precision resistors, combining a two-digit value with a letter multiplier.

• Example: 51C
  • 51 refers to 33.2Ω in the EIA table.
  • C (multiplier) = 100.
  • Final value: 3.32kΩ.
