SMD (Surface Mount Device) resistors use numerical codes instead of color bands to represent their resistance values. These codes follow specific formats that determine the resistance and multiplier. here is how you can Calculate SMD Resistor Value
Types of SMD Resistor Codes
1. 3-Digit Code (XYZ, XRZ, RYZ)
- The standard format is
XYZ, where:XandYare significant figures.Zis the multiplier (power of 10).- Example:
472→47 × 10²= 4.7kΩ.
- If
Rappears in the second position (XRZ), it acts as a decimal point:- Example:
3R3→ 3.3Ω.
- Example:
- If
Rappears in the first position (RYZ), the value is less than 1Ω:- Example:
R47→ 0.47Ω.
- Example:
| Code Format | Example | Calculation | Final Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| XYZ | 102 | 10 × 10² | 1kΩ |
| XRZ | 4R7 | 4.7Ω | 4.7Ω |
| RYZ | R68 | 0.68Ω | 0.68Ω |

2. 4-Digit Code (WXYZ, WXRZ, WRYZ, RXYZ)
- The standard format is
WXYZ, where:WXYare significant figures.Zis the multiplier (power of 10).- Example:
4701 → 470 × 10-5 = 4.07mΩ
- If
Rappears in the second position (WXRZ), it acts as a decimal point:- Example:
24R9→ 24.9Ω.
- Example:
- If
Rappears in the first position (RXYZ), the value is less than 1Ω:- Example:
R100→ 0.100Ω (100mΩ).
- Example:
- If
Rappears in the third position (WRYZ), the value is in decimal format:- Example:
68R5→ 68.5Ω.
- Example:
| Code Format | Example | Calculation | Final Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| WXYZ | 1002 | 100 × 10-4 | 0.01Ω |
| WXRZ | 24R9 | 24.9Ω | 24.9Ω |
| WRYZ | 68R5 | 68.5Ω | 68.5Ω |
| RXYZ | R150 | 0.150Ω | 150mΩ |

3. EIA-96 Code
The EIA-96 system is used for high-precision resistors, combining a two-digit value with a letter multiplier.
- Example:
51C51refers to 33.2Ω in the EIA table.C(multiplier) = 100.- Final value: 3.32kΩ.
We’ll cover EIA-96 in detail in another post!
